China a common flute is the di (ti). It has been played there for over 1000
years and is made of bamboo. A small piece of tissue paper covers one of the
holes. This causes a small buzzing when played, rather like a kazoo. In ancient
history these were decorated with the head and tail of a dragon. Another flute
from China is the pigeon whiste (ko-ling). This is a thousand year old mud
calabash or bamboo pipe flute attached to the tail of a live bird. Then when the
bird flies, the music is played by the air rushing by. Chinese flutes (tch'e)
have been found in poems over 3000 years old. In fact, the Chinese character for
flute symbolizes music as well.
