His name was Hotei or Hotei of China. It is recorded that he in died in 941 A.D. The name Hotei means cotton-sack. Therefore, 'The Cotton-sack Monk'. The cotton sack was for carrying recycled rags. He lived as a transient and slept in the open, attracting curious children. He never spoke except for smiling and laughing.
