SHITO-RYU KARATE

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Fumio Demura has
considerable experience in the martial arts. During his youth, he studied
aikido, kendo, judo and karate. While studying for a Bachelor of Science
degree in economics at the University in Tokyo, Demura also became
interested in martial arts weapons. Consequently, he studied the bo, the
sai, the tonfa, the kama and the nunchaku from Kenshin Taira and Ryusho
Sakagami.
Among his many tournament wins, Demura has won the East
Japan, the Kanto District and the Shito-Ryu Annual championships. He was
also the All-Japan Karate Free-Style Tournament champion between
1961-1964. Demura has also served as the president of the Japan Karate
Association and is a member of the prestigious Black Belt Hall of Fame
(1969, Instructor of the Year; 1975, Man of the Year).
Demura-now a
6th dan - is considered to be one of the leading martial artists and one
of the best karate instructors in the world. Demura now concentrates on
karate and weapons, including the art of Okinawan kobudo. An enthusiastic
instructor, Demura travels extensively to teach these arts throughout the
world. He is also the author of six other books for Ohara Publications,
Inc.
Shito-ryu is one of the four major styles of Japanese karate. In
this fully illustrated book, Demura covers the striking points, target
areas, stances, hand, elbow, foot techniques, and blocking methods which
form the cornerstone of shito-ryu karate.
