A complex and universal symbol. The dragon, the 'winged serpent', combines the serpent and bird as matter and spirit. Originally dragons were perceived as manifestations of the life-giving waters (the serpent) and the breath of life (bird). dragons were identified with sky gods and their earthly delegates. In Chinese belief the dragon represents the highest spiritual power, the supernatural, infinity, the spirit of change, the rhythms of nature, supernatural wisdom and strength.
