Dragons

The dragon's form varied from the earliest times. The Chaldean dragon Tiamat had four legs, as clay body, and wings, where as the biblical dragon of Revelation," the old serpent," was many-headed like the Greek Hydra. Because they not only possessed both protective and terror-inspiring qualities but also had decorative effigies, dragons were early used as warlike emblems. Thus, in the Iliad, King Agamemnon had on his shield a blue three-headed snake, just as the Norse warriors in later times painted dragons on their shields and carved dragons' head on the prows of their ships. In England before the Norman Conquest, the dragon was chief among the royal ensigns in war, having been instituted as such by Other Pendragon, father of King Arthur.

Just For Fun

The term dragon has no zoological meaning, but it has been applied in the Latin generic name Dracut a number of species of small lizards found in the Indo-Malayan region. The name is also popularly applied to the giant monitor, Various komodoensis, discovered on Komodo, in Indonesia.

Decorative Dragons

Dragons have been in mythology and legend for thousands of years. Almost every country in the world as some sort of dragon story. Where did they originate from? Did people actually SEE dragons? By some strange chance, were their dinosaurs still roaming the earth only a few thousand years ago? Were some of the dragons people saw actually lizards that have extra skin, and can glide such as the Kuehneosaurus, or the flying dinosaurs the Archaeopteryx or Pterosaurs?

Dragon Questions

Maybe, but these are questions none can answer. Dragons will always live on the Earth, we do have real dragons here! There is even a genus of lizard called draco. Two "dragon" lizards are water dragons, and Komodo dragons. The water dragon is a popular small lizard to keep as pets. The Komodo dragon (not discovered until 1912!) is the largest known lizard today, reaching lengths of 10 feet, and 150 pounds. It eats animals as large as goats, and can run faster than a horse!

Powerful Dragons

So, why dragons? Is it their powerful presence? Are they watching us without us watching them? Some people think so. But until a dragon wants itself to be known, it will only show itself to those who TRULY believe.
